What is Designers Toolbox?

Designers Toolbox is a free resource of all of the standard information designers need on a daily basis.

Where did the idea for Designers Toolbox come from?

Being designers, we were always in need of some piece of information, like the size of #10 envelope, but never had the information at our fingertips. For example, to get the size of a #10 envelope we had three choices: call the printer; measure it ourselves; or use Google. You can't call a printer in the middle of the night, trying to measure the envelope yourself was never 100% accurate, and the Web site you Googled might not be correct. So, we decided build a site for all of those little bits of information a designer is expected to know. And the nice thing about having all this information on a Web site is you cannot misplace it, loose it, or have it stolen from your desk.

What resources do you have available to designers?

Designers Toolbox has print, online, and legal resources. Under the print section is all the standard envelope sizes, postcard sizes, and folder sizes; all with die lines. Also, there are proof readers marks, standard foldings, and a fraction-to-decimal chart. In the online section there is a CSS generator, standard banner sizes, HTML character chart, a break down of online font control, and operation system form elements for comping Web sites. In the legal section contains Web privacy and legal statements, and freelance agreements. Plus, there is a Lorem Ipsum generator and design awards calendar.

Do you plan on having more tools in the near future?

Yes, we have quite a few new items in the works. Most notably the My Portfolio section, which will allow graphic designers to have a personal online portfolio without having to program the HTML. It will be fully customizable, including the amount of sections, section names, fonts, colors, and Home page design. And, most importantly, each My Portfolio will have 100 MB of space and can show JPEG, GIF, SWF, MOV, and MP3 files.

What sites can you recommend as resources?

www.brandsoftheworld.com
This is a great resource if you need a logo during a pitch. It is also nice to just use for inspiration. We would add this to our site, but legal issues won't let us.

www.paperspecs.com
Great place for getting paper samples.

www.coolhomepages.com
When designer's block hits, you can always click through and see new ideas.

Any advice to designers?

Don't get bogged down in the client's feedback. If they want you to do something ugly, show them, but have your idea ready as well. Most of the time they will see the error of their ways and take your recommendation.
